                                                    PREVIOUS ARTIST STATEMENT

I am an African American fine artist who paint cultural images on stretched cotton canvas with acrylic or oil paint.  An intent of my images  is to explore the history and experiences of the African diaspora and African American culture.   Also, I create art that advances exploration of my creative process by producing conceptual, expressionistic images that reflect a presence of humankind.  I use expressionism, symbolism and realism to create conceptual imagery that challenges the oppressive and marginalizing narratives and celebrates the strength and diversity of the African American community.  I am inspired by literature, music, folklore, history and personal memories.  My paintings are not just art, but also politics that ask the viewers to think about the past, present and future of the African American identity.  I am always looking for new and creative ways of expressing my concerns as an artist.  I use color theory, line, shape, form and the edge of the composition to create mood and conflict in my subject matter.

I am concerned with compositional aesthetics and creating art that is vertical.  The edge of the canvas is an exploration of psychological tension that can establish or suggest mood.  My painting style is very expressive and powerful.  I use artist quality graphite and paint to generate images that convey emotions and messages that are intended to resonate with all viewers.  I use symbolic elements from history, culture and literature to create imagery that reflects the African American identity and experience.  I create political and provocative images of art with the intent to challenge the dominant narratives and stereotypes and invite the viewer to question their assumptions and perspectives of learned biases.

As a conceptual artist, I develop sketches and artwork designed to stimulate conversation and thought of African American culture, trauma, aspiration and history.   As a social conceptual artist, an overwhelming consciousness is to experiment with paint and photography to create bodies of art that coherently express my experiences, thoughts and human existence.   I have been influenced by racism, sexism, segregation, discrimination, civil rights and our shared 400 years of American Histories.  I am motivated to create art that pleases an international audience.  I am in pursuit of a more truthful understanding of my historical existence.   My Art is a continuous, creative journey of exploration and representation of life experiences.
